Receiving Your Loved Ones Ashes

Here at Morris & Morris, our team offers you and your family the best possible advice, even after the funeral has taken place. Here you will find some options that may be helpful when deciding what to do with your loved ones ashes.

Mortuary Urn on a Table

Ashes

The option of whether to inter (Bury), scatter, travel with, or keep the ashes is entirely up to you and your family and we hope this brochure will be of some assistance.

When you receive the ashes from Maunu Crematorium, they will be in a temporary environmentally friendly pine urn. This urn is not suitable for postage, courier or travelling overseas.

We have a selection of urns should you choose to purchase one.

If you are looking at travelling overseas with the ashes, please ring and speak to your funeral director before-hand, as you will need certain documentation from us for travel purposes.

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us with our details on the back.

Remembrance Glass

Urns & Keepsakes

We offer a wide range of urns and keepsakes so the memory of your loved one can last for generations.

You have the option of selecting one of our wooden urns or solid ceramic urns which we can transfer the ashes to while you wait.

If you are wanting other options in regards to scattering, we have a range of ‘scattering tubes’ which allow a hole to be punched at the top and the ashes to flow freely.

Our keepsakes range from photo frames, small urns, jewellery, coloured glass spheres and touch stones which allow a small amount of ashes to be used.

Please Note: The jewellery, touch stones and glass spheres all need to be sent off site to be made.

Scattering

If you are wanting to scatter the ashes using the urn provided by Maunu Crematorium, here are some helpful tips. You can also purchase a purpose made tube from us for scattering. There are very few restrictions as to where you choose to do this. The pine urn has a pin through the top of the sliding lid. Sometimes this can be difficult to remove so the use of a small tool may be needed. Inside the urn, the ashes will be sealed in a brown paper bag.

Please Note: Due to the cremation process, if you are wanting to scatter the ashes at a later date, they should be stored in a dry environment as they are susceptible to absorbing moisture.

Scattering ashes at Maunu Cemetery

For a small fee, the Whangarei District Council have areas in the Maunu Cemetery for scattering ashes.

The Glades of Remembrance which is a bush area at the far right of the cemetery and The rose gardens within the cemetery itself.

All ashes scattered here are documented and accounted for so please notify either your funeral director or the cemetery staff.

Families may also wish to scatter ashes at a private residence or a public area. There are very few restrictions, but we do advise our families to be sensitive to other people if you are scattering in a public place.

Interment (Burial)

You can either contact the cemetery of your choice directly or speak to your funeral director who can assist you in booking the cemetery, organising the day and time of the interment and future options regarding plaques.

Some cemeteries have regulations regarding the height and style of plaques and memorials, so our staff can help you with this.

  • Whangarei cemeteries are open to the public seven days a week, 52 weeks a year and the council is responsible for a number of cemeteries including:
  • Maunu – situated in Cemetery Road off SH14.
  • Onerahi – situated on Church Street west of Whangarei.
  • Kamo – situated in Ketenikau Road off Three Mile Bush Road west of Kamo.

Memorialisation

At Maunu Cemetery, ‘The book of remembrance’ is located in the old Town Basin Information Kiosk close to Maunu Crematorium within the cemetery grounds. Your funeral director can arrange for an insertion of the deceased name, dates and a short message that can be recorded on the anniversary of the death of your loved one.

Also, situated close to the crematorium is the Robinson Memorials granite memorial book. A small granite plaque with an inscription can be placed on this book and this can be arranged through Robinson Memorials who are members of the New Zealand Master Monumental Masons Association.
